VFI created Voices from Inside/OUT in the fall of 2004. It is a series of performances and readings, all followed by discussion, designed to bring the stories of incarcerated women into public venues so that the women can interact positively with the communities to which they return.

VFI/OUT arranges presentations where women from minimum security facilities or women released into the community read their work at area colleges and universities.   Offered to students of criminal justice, social work, women’s studies, or English, and  to the general public,  the presentations are followed by dialogue about the experiences and commonalities shared by the readers and the audience.

Recent readings and performances:

With a PBS Connector Grant, VFI/OUT presented a large public reading in the fall of 2005 as part of The Poetry Center at Smith College. In 2006 similar performances were given at Western New England College and Holyoke Community College. Magdalena Gomez was artistic director for these readings.

Readings have also been given at Mt. Holyoke College, Westfield State College, University of Massachusetts, and local bookstores.

“I learned that incarcerated women aren’t a permanent strain on our economy, but potential contributors to the future growth of our community. I’ve always

realized writing’s healing powers, but seeing it in person, in an ex-inmate,

reiterates the fact. Thank you for coming.”
