The women we serve are representative of the population of incarcerated women in the United States today. As such, the majority are women of color, many of whom are Spanish-speaking and not fluent in English. In addition, the majority are single parents and have experienced previous trauma in their lives—such as childhood abuse and neglect—and have been accused or convicted of non-violent, drug-related crimes. In VFI workshops they prove themselves to be creative, articulate communicators of the human spirit. |

WHO WE ARE |
|
“I’m from Never sees. I’m from taking your tongue on a sleigh ride. I’m from warm chocolate chip cookies and a roast in the oven, from the subway, the el and looking out the window. I’m from touch football on a hot summer night From Alvida and Robina gossiping at the head of the table. I’m from getting stuck in the woods and following the horse back home in the dark…”
